I'm helping a friend clean up the mess that Isabel left on his house and in his back yard. He had eight Red Oak trees fall - two of them hitting his house. Four of the tress are 24" - 30" in diamiter. We got everything cut into 4' sections. My question is - will my B2910 w/ 402 loader be able to lift a 30" x 4' section of red oak? Should I put chain around it and lift it with the tooth bar, or run the chain over the arm where the bucket pivots?

Go for it. It is hard to tell the actual weight but in the worst case they have relief valves that will keep you from breaking the loader and the tractor. ....

I figure red oak at 42 lbs per cubic foot, which would equal about 825 lbs per log. ....

I don't know what the lifting plan is or what's going to be done with the logs. I'd probably borrow my neighbour's log rolling gadget and roll them onto two chains and fashion a choker sling using two loops. A single loop and they'll always get off centre. One end will be low and they'll swing around and maybe into the tractor. However, two loops hung from the loader arms may be wider than 4' so the loops may tend to pull off the ends of the logs. Spreaders and slings are sometimes used to cure such problems.
An off center single loop may lift a log almost vertical. If the log doesn't come out of even a choker, you may not be able to lift them high enough to load them into a trailer or maybe not even off the ground. The logs will be start off close to the tractor and will get closer as they are lifted.
When the slack is taken out of a chain/grab hook rig, it always seems like the chain is too long. That means the log can swing and they can easily swing back into the tractor rad when they come off the ground. It also means the loader has to go higher to get them off the ground, and higher means closer to the tractor. Got to watch this stuff and it helps to have a spotter because the operator can't see the logs. Load binders can help take out the slack.
Running chain through the pipe between the loader arms will give a bit more power and also take load off the loader and tractor frame. Reach is sacrificed and the logs would be even closer to the tractor. ....

I think the 2910 and my Deere 4115 are in the same weight/loader class.
I have lifted such loads with the 4115 and the 4100 before it but found I needed about a thousand pounds of combined rear ballast to do it safely.
Slinging a box scraper off the back end might not be enough in this case. ....

In addition to what all has been said; if you haven't done so already, check your tire pressures especially the fronts to be sure they have the proper inflation pressure to support the weight and minimize the risk of running a tire off the rim bead, bottoming out, or bending a rim on bumps. Remember to keep the load (bucket) as low as is possible especially while traversing with the tractor to minimize the risk of rolling the tractor. Take things nice and slow with that much weight. Be careful and good luck with the clean up! ....

Lifting it, SURE !!
Carrying it, probably a VERY different story ....
You will probably have a better shot at carrying it on a 3pth platform of forks.
Worst case scenario is that you have to cut it into smaller pieces.
